Here we are in the Season of New Beginnings,
between the Solar New Year that has just begun
and the Lunar New Year soon to arrive.

It is the time of resolutions and fresh starts,
a time to shape the year ahead.
As an Irish friend says,
“Begin as you intend to proceed.”

May I humbly urge that we feed our creative interests,
use our hands,
make for the pleasure of it,
kindle and promote curiosity.

I am beginning the year painting and invite you to come along.
The theme and title of my 6-week class,
XX. PAINT BEST,
is inspired by a short list of New Year’s “rulins”
borrowed from Woody Guthrie’s 1943 list:
18. Stay Glad  20. Dream Good  26. Dance Better.
To this I add XX. Paint Best.

As a teacher, I am most curious about the painter.
How can we Paint Best?
I see painting as a revealer that teaches us to start fresh,
to invent from mistakes, to be daring and happy.
The best way to paint is to begin.
